Old Beginnings

Short film

2018

Director: Suni Khan

Costume Designer: Ilaria Mosca

Production Designer: Madge Healey

Director of photography: Tom O’Keefe

Starring: Hannah Arterton, Lewis Reeves, Harriet Green, Rupert Ratcliffe, Selina Giles, Shango Baku

“WHAT IF THERE WAS A METHOD THAT ALLOWED YOU TO EXTINGUISH ALL THE FAILINGS OF THE PAST?”

Old Beginnings is a post-modern, tragic romance about a young couple trying to rid themselves of the past using an  unorthodox and bizarre ritual as they rekindle their love.

Produced by Lewis Partovi, created and directed by Suni Khan, starring Hannah Arterton and Lewis Reeves, and with a soundtrack featuring Atoms for Peace, Bloc Party and M83.

The outfits designed, for the different scenes and the different characters, 7 plus the dummy/replica of the two protagonists, were in total 16. In particular, for Sophia’s costumes, I used symbolic colors to indicate her delevopment during the story: for example she wears red when she meets the Doctor for the ritual, white during the “baptism” of the dummies scene, as a newborn, and yellow (danger) in the twisted end of the story.

The grasskeeper’s costume has instead been broken down to give it a dirty and used look.

Costume Designer: Ilaria Mosca

Cinematographer: Alfie Biddle

Starring: David H.M. Williams,

“MAUREEN is the dark, yet blackly comic story of a strange relationship between an unnamed man and his partner, Graham. Conveyed in the form of a series of interlocking monologues, it soon becomes clear that perhaps the truth of this story is far more complicated than we’re initially led to believe…”

Pink, as the wafers loved by Graham,  is a key colour in the choice of the outfits’ ones. The costume for the protagonist becomes more “feminine” as the film goes on,  adding new elements to the initial pink and blue outfit evey time he changes room: therefore in the bathroom sequence he uses yellowe rubber gloves and a pink sponge; in the closet scene he is wearing on top of his shirt the flower neglige we see in Graham’s death footage: in the final bedroom scene, he is now talking to a mysterious interlocutor, wearing male pink lace lingerie, the neglige and with an heavy make-up on. His “transformation” is now complete.

As regards Graham, he is portrayed as a greasy masculine man in blue shirt, the “traditional colour” for men. When he is “in touch with his feminine side” on the sofa eating a pink wafer, wears a silk neglige on top of his boxers and bare chest.

The handsome young guy is instead portrayed as the typical leather jacket and t-shirt guy.

Design and making of the costume for the final scene of the film, when the girl protagonist turns into a fish.

The costume was designed to be used to shoot underwater scenes, with many layers of long pleated light fabric to recall the long tail of the Betta Fish. To create the fishscale effect on the bust, I instead used the North American smocking technique.
