“Jujuman explores the impact of ancient West African superstition on the modern-day Nigerian diaspora in London”.
Jujuman follows the story of Mani, a south east London gang leader who is forced to rethink his attitudes towards morality when he is confronted by a mysterious vigilante African witchdoctor who appears to have placed a curse on him contrived to put his mothers life in danger. Mani must make a choice, leave the gang world behind or face the consequences of the curse!
Costume wise, it was interesting to explore Nigerian culture, how Nigerians in London dress but especially researching about the figure of the Jujuman and its rituals. The costume for him was made from scratch by me, after few different prototypes, and includes handmade beaded jewelry and talismans. The mask needed to shoot fire (being worn by a stunt performer), so I had to research about materials and shapes that were safe to use and easy to mold, and worked with thermoplastic.
